Gary Leong

Dr. Leong has a clinical and research appointment at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital and The University of Queensland where he conducts clinical and basic research into the origins and effects of child obesity on metabolism and risk for cardio-metabolic disease. He has memberships of several national and international paediatric endocrine and research societies and was the last Chair of the Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group Growth Hormone Advisory Committee, which helped the Federal Department of Health providing expert policy advice on children with short stature treated with growth hormone therapy. Dr.Leong is a UQ Clinical Expert and a member of the NHMRC Research Translation Faculty. Over the last 15 years has received several awards and fellowships including a NHMRC Clinical Career Development Award, an Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Edman Award, a Queensland Smart State Clinical Fellowship, the Endocrine Society (USA) Bridge Grant Award, an American Society of Bone Mineral Research John Haddad Young Investigator Award and most recently a QLD Health Senior Clinical Academic Fellowship. Dr. Leong sees infants, children and adolescents into young adulthood with disorders of growth and puberty, including: short stature early and delayed puberty thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism) disorders of the pituitary gland lifestyle metabolic disorders of child and adolescent obesity, insulin resistance, PCOS, pre-type 2 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
