Barry Popkin
Barry M. Popkin, PhD,the W. R. Kenan, Jr. distinguished professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. An economist and nutrition epidemiologist, he developed the concept of the Nutrition Transition, the study of the dynamic shifts in dietary intake and physical activity patterns and trends and obesity. His global food research program has included a number of large on-going cohort studies, mainly NIH funded, along with in-depth work on diet, activity, and the impact of large-scale regulatory efforts, which he has been central in promoting in many countries. He is one of the most cited nutrition scholars in the world while also working with countries globally to initiate and evaluate large-scale regulatory efforts to improve our diets and food systems.
